Immigration and tourism in Dominica
Dominica has only few beaches and is mostly volcanic; therefore, tourism has developed at a slower pace than on neighbouring islands. Nevertheless, Dominica’s rainforests, mountains, hot springs, freshwater lakes, diving spots and waterfalls make it an attractive eco-tourism destination.
The volcanic nature of the island has attracted scuba divers. Due to the development of waterfront facilities and modern docking in Roseau, cruise ship stopovers have increased greatly. Out of 22 Caribbean islands tracked, Dominica had the fewest tourists in 2008: 55,800 or 0.3% of the total.
The Commonwealth of Dominica offers an official economic citizenship to those seeking a valid second passport. It is possible to acquire citizenship in exchange for a cash contribution. Total costs excluding all fees for a single applicant are 100,000 USD with a discount for additional passports for spouses and children. Alternatively, since 2014, applicants can make a 200,000 USD investment in real estate, in which case the cost of citizenship is 50,000. USD The citizenship program and its new real estate investment option has become the main source of Foreign Direct Investment into Dominica by early 2016.
